We'll be staying with a friend in Madisonville, about 70mi. SW of Gatlinburg.
Good area to be in for fishing, only a few hours drive from a lot of good places. My top 2 suggestions are;
1. Hiwassee River- Upper section smallmouth bass, don't bother with the middle section, lower section at the Big Bend Rec. Area is where it turns into trophy trout water. Be sure to check when they will be generating because the water will come up quick. With the water up it is about 100 yards wide in places. BE CAREFUL.
2. If you can make it to the Great Smokys Mtns National Park you NEED to fish Abrams Creek, it is about 15 miles from Madisonville as the crow flies. You would want to fish below Abrams Falls and down past Abrams Creek Campgrounds, the stream becomes a bit more difficult to access at this point, but the effort is worth it, a lot of large browns lurk in the those long deep pools around there.
As for flies...you ready for this??
Dry Flies:
Male Adams and parachute variety
Thunder Head- Local Fly
Corey's Claftail- Local fly
Yellow Palmer
Copperhead
Yellow Humpy
Jim Charley
Beaver Tan- Local Fly
Dark and Light Caddis
Nymphs:
March Bowns
Hendrickson
BWO
Dark Stone and brown too
Tellico
Coffey's Stone
Hare's Ear
Olive Stone Peeking Caddis
Cahill
Yellow Caddis
And of course the ever famous Yallerhammer
Any other questions feel free to ask.
