A few beers! Paul if you're ever in the Newport R.I. area I promise to
take you for a couple beers for a parachute lesson. I might even hook you
up with a few fishing buddies.....
Seriously, I like the fact that he will meet you to socialize and teach you
some tips over beers. That says a lot about the man. I've never met him
but I respect the willingness he has to share his knowledge. The biggest
turn off to me is a tyer that isn't willing to share and teach others.
Lately I've seen a few of the shops in this area that have started having
free fly-tying clinics. They are held on Saturdays and some of the best
tyers in our area come in and teach anyone willing to visit the shop that
day. You can sit down and tie a fly with them and they provide you with the
materials. This improves the skills of the tyers and by that improves
their business. It's a win win situation. Ken Abrames also goes so far as
to have free Tuesday night fishing. If you show up for an evening of
fishing there are always a few other guides there that help out and they
teach how to fish the surf and read the water conditions. They hold this in
a different place each time. I have a lot admiration for his willingness
to share his time and knowledge.
