The late Joe Bates attributed the first tube flies to
Winnie Morawski, created while she was working for an Aberdeen tackle
firm circa 1945. Apparently they were tied on turkey quill sections with
the pith removed.
The late Bob Johns wrote an article in Fly Rod & Reel November 1989 on Tube Flies. He thought that the tube flies were developed in the late 1800's in Scandinavia for the Atlantic Salmon runs on the larger rivers of the area. As he noted, they were developed to provide a larger fly with better hooking capability but, more importantly, reduced leverage at the hook-up point. Bob did quite a bit of fishing in those areas in the 1980's.
