1. Any of George Leonard Herter's Professional Fly Tying Manuals of the 40's. I have one that gives super instruction for the whip finish. In fact, when I saw Herter's drawings I equated the whip finish to whipping the ends of a frayed rope, a trick that
I learned in the BSA. From there it was easy!
2. The Art of Fly Tying, by John van Vliet - Good all around book for beginners and old fogies alike
3. Art Flick's Master Fly Tying Guide - Learn from the Masters
4. Nymph and Fly Tying Manual, by Randall Kaufmann - As good a nymph fly tying manual as I've seen.
5. The Masters on the Nymph, pieces by the great nymph fishers on tying and use of nymphs.

I have all the above and several others, but these are the ones I use most.
