Another wise move is to backup EVERYTHING of value on
a regular basis!  Pictures, documents, spreadsheets,
etc.---  even have a backup list of your favorite
links.  I have seen viruses trash systems in no time. 
Two examples:

1) I had to reformat a hard drive earlier this year
because of corrupted code, most likely due to virus
activity.  Fortunately, I had the summers fishing trip
pics backed up : )
2) A friend of mine lost six weeks of chemistry
research because a virus deleted the only copies of
the thesis he had.  No backups on floppies or CD's. 
He was able to rewrite in two weeks, but had to retype
everything in :(
