Works OK, but you can't force it.  Just take your time. So far, I've practiced by re-sizing some 1" dowels I bought at home depot. They're semi-hard.  Haven't tried Maple, birch or some of the harder hardwoods yet, but I think it'll work ok, but like I said, don't force the tool onto the wood, just ease it onto it.
