Patrick, when CDC featers are dyed, they are first cleaned and most, if not all the "oil" is washed away before they are dyed. It is actually the nature of the Barbules on the feathers themselves that aid so much in floatability. And that is also why you NEVER want to use any floatant with flies that had been tyed with CDC. If you do, you will ruin that floatability. A few false cast is all you should EVER need to do, to get the fly floating again, "like a cork." mark.............

CDC FEATHERS

From the french 'Cul de Canard'.  Sometimes lovingly known here as "Duck
Butt Feathers".  But they are from the BACK of the duck.

These are the feathers that encircle the preen gland on the back of the duck
and are very fine but saturated with "duck oil". As a reult, they cause a
fly to float like a cork.
