Go to the South Dakota page on the internet and there are listed many things
to do in that area. One can fish Rapid creek, Spearfish canyon and there is
a very helpful fly shop in Rapid City( for the life of me I can't remember
it's name, but I believe it is on the SD page). The hills are beautiful.
You'll know when you are almost there, if you are driving, as the roads
become pink as you see the dark, black appearing hills in the distance and
the sagebrush (if you're coming from the Wyoming side) changes to tall
prairie grass. The roads are pink because the soil is so full of iron that
it is actually a deep, rusty red and when mixed in as gravel, makes the
roads look pink. The trees are black hills spruce, aromatic and beautiful
to look at. The hills themselves are very old mountains..very worn out but
originally caused by upheaval. Much of the rest of SD hills and valleys is
caused by old glacial meltdown with the debris forming the hollows and
draws. You'll see some beautiful, wild country. If you wish to travel
another 200 miles into the center of the state, there is excellent fishing
outside of Gettysburg, SD and also outside of Pierre (state capitol) on the
Oahe (Pierre) dam area and also on the Missouri. My home city is Gettysburg
and the Missouri is a hot fishing spot in the spring, summer and fall. Hope
you have a wonderful time in SD. Joyce
