Paul, The only fly I have heard named as a Sidewinder is a no-hackle dun. A PMD example of a no-hackle dun is here: <http://www.westfly.com/patterns/dry/nohackle.shtml>
In a talk and slide show by Mike Lawson on spring creek fishing, he noted that the no-hackle is his favorite dry fly, so yes, it catches fish!
He also (for a lark) fished the no-hackle dun as his entry in the Jackson Hole One-Fly Contest, and he caught 27 fish. He had a photo of the fly after 27 fish, and it looked like an moth that had flown into a high-tension power line!
