Hi Gang!

I just returned home this afternoon after a 580 mile drive from Wild Cat Shoals Resort in Flippin, Ark. Left this morning at 5 a.m. and got home at 2:15 p.m.

SOW BUG was a BLAST!!

It's an experience that every fly tyier should enjoy at least once. I tied Friday afternoon and went through two boxes - 50 hooks tying my Gunney Sack. Everybody who came by wanted one. If I'd been at home, there'd been no way I could tie fifty flies in one sitting. Also tied another 15 of my Darth Raider. In fact, I about wore my right thumb out and did not even attempt to tie any flies on Saturday. There was a big bunch of VFB'ers there. Must have been close to 20. Getting to meet all them was a real delight. It's amazing how you can throw a bunch of people together who have never met, but have a common interest and see how unbelievably quick they meld as a group. It was if we'd all known each other for years - Old Home Week! Jeff and I did a big BBQ brisket, smoked with mesquite, pork ribs, drumsticks, etc. etc. and Mark and Valerie Delaney did a couple of Cajun dishes, black beans and rice and two kinds of picante sauce and Rene made a Bavarian Bread Pudding. We must have fed around 30 last night. And - there was not a bit of meat left. My "dynamite" brisket rub and Jeff's BBQ sauce was a real hit with everyone. Took lots of great photos. The only thing I'll do different next year is that I'll take Jody with me. Rick, Alan, and the two Mark's wives attended and had a blast too. This was the first time I'd ever tied in front of an audience and I was wishing I could tie, back in a corner in a dark place, and go unnoticed. :-P But . . . after tying a couple of flies, I settled down. Reminded me of the butterflies I always got before playing a basketball game in high school. They always went away when I got on the court. Same way with tying in front of a crowd.

I finally won a sports bet from Jeff when UT beat KSU yesterday. Won a jar of Jeff's BBQ sauce. I'd lost three UT - KSU bets in a row. :-D My two cases of Shiner Bock went in a hurry. Something about the mystique of a Texas German Beer. Rene liked it too.

Well, enough blabbering and rambling. Gotta go through 185 emails.

I highly recommend Sow Bug to each of you for 2005.
