Don, I have had good luck with triamcinolone ointment - I think it is prescription though.  It is a stronger topical corticosteroid than what the cortisone ointments are and worked better for me.  I would not think it would interfere with your surgery since the topicals are not absorbed very much, but what do I know, I only doctor large, hairy, four-legged critters!
