Place the rod behind your knees, place a hand on each rod section, open your legs, use steady pressure from your knees to pull the rod apart. If you have a piece or two of that nonslip covering or the rubber jar openers use that to get a better grip on the rod. Has worked for me for over 50 years without damaging the rod sections. DH
