"Perhaps the reason that the dry-fly fishing was slow to catch hold in this country lay in the fact that many British writers had expressed the idea that it was poor technique for fast water. These writers meant that anything much swifter than the placid chalk streams were impractical for the floating fly. Men like Halford were so idolized by our anglers that they did not attempt to use the dry fly on our faster streams."
