Well I would have to say that using a peanut would be bait casting with a
fly rod.  I suppose if the peanut were made of feathers and thread that
would appease the purists as well.

For cats, I just tie a small piece of brightly colored yarn on the end of
my tippet.  Of course I suppose this could be considered using an indicator
and thereby bring into question by some purists whether it is truly fly
fishing.  Although now that I think about it, it is dry, so there may be a
trade-off.
