Wes,
a quick browse through a catalog from a supplier like Cabelas here:

Top competition series, RU 520-100 (Bait rod) 545.95 Euro
Shimano RL220-400FA reel, 266 Euro
Berley Foreline 300 yards, 40 Euro
Seat with integrated drawer to store your dobber 669 Euro

Add some umbreallas, clothing, ......

Stuff is designed to fish with maggots.
Snobs fish with maggots?

Just a quick browse through the Cabela's catalog:

Sage SLT rod - $535
Sage 3000 reel - $320
Line and backing - $60

So $915 in your hand but a lot of opportunity to spend more.

Simms GORE-TEX waders - $200
Simms Guide Boot - $140
Simms Guide Vest - $150
T3 Tilley hat - $55
Action Optics Glasses - $150
A net gets you over $700 and we have not put anything in the vest yet.

I'll use myself as an example here:

-3 fly boxes - mine are the $8 foam kind but lets go with the C&F Waterproof fly box - 3x40 = $120
-conservative guess - 100 flies per box - about $400 if you buy them from Cabela's closer to $600 in your local shop
-waterproof disposable camera but lets go with a nice little digital at $200
-GPS unit (just cause) $150
-leaders, floatant, ... - $50

Grand total of $2570

Yes, you can do it for a lot less and most of us do (I just bought a Cabela's stowaway rod/reel/line combo for $120 for instance) but a lot of guys spend much more that the $2570 outlined above.

To the guy on the bank with a bucket of worms and a zebco the guy above is a snob.
