Nick, Not to skirt the question, but you're going to have a lot of them if you're just picking up the hobby again. What I do is just go to Google.com and type in whatever I want to know. I just tried it with Z-lon and found all sorts of stuff- too much to re-write.
The neat part is once you've studied a topic, you now become a resource for information, and can then share that with the list. I find lots of strange fibers inside of other things. Most probably don't have names. Some braided fly materials come with great winging material as the core. I bought some clothes line that is a clear tube with white micro-fibers in the center that have really neat qualities. Carpet yarns are the basis for many of the fly yarns, and others come from the upholstery trade. Then it gets into fiber shape, like tri-lobal and stuff. Check old stuffed animals, sometimes the stuffing makes good dubbing, and hairs on the animal make good flies, too. Then there's road-kill. Maybe I can ask you something right away. I have quite recently carried my fly-tying box up from the cellar after a few years break and also discovered the unlimited amount of fly patterns there are to be found in the Internet. But it seems I've fallen behind quite a bit when it comes to materials and now I'm trying to get up to date with all the new stuff. Now I have a question about Z-lon. I don't really know if it's a new invention or not. I only know I haven't seen it before, myself. I can't find it in any of the stores I have closeby so I have only seen it on pictures. It looks like Polypropylene to me... And some patterns even says 'Z-lon OR Poly yarn'. So what is the difference between the two of them? Another one is Antron. What is that (and its qualities)?
