I went out fishing
yesterday and caught the largest trout I've ever seen...in
my sleep, of course. It was fun
though, as it had taken me 2 days to complete the fly and
also as it was made of US material. So all of you helped me to catch that
trout.
The reason
for the 2 days of tying it was that I just HAD to go for
smaller than DonO's 32's. A quill winged Irresistible Wulff is hard work when
tying it on a #34 hook. Making a deer hair body on a hook that size is rough if you also want space for wings and hackle. And
clipping down the hair long enough to actually
get the hook visible was picky
too. Yes, that fly took many
tries to make (and tying it didn't relieve any
stress like Dr. DonO said tying
would)...
Then it turned out, which I actually
didn't think of until I stood by the water, that this wasn't a fly to fish with
a 0.18 tippet. Imagine the thrill when I later stood bringing the fish in... a 10lbs trout on a #34 hook using 0.04
tippet. Believe me when I say
I wasn't the boss in that
fight.
I probably won't win a fight like that in real life. I'm actually quite sure I won't come to
the point trying, as I would die from a stroke already in front
of the vice when trying to tie the fly...
