That brought a flash back. It was the scotch poacher that I was thinking about.
Thanks.

If you are thinking of a nz swamp (hen) bird - I suspect you are talking
about the Pukeko (or Pookak as we call it in OZ).
A water hen with Blue Black feathers very useful and the key ingredient of
some of my favourite flies..
Scotch Poacher
Craig's Nighttime
Taihape Tickler
unfortuntely this is a protected species so coming by pukeko feathers is
rather difficult... I found a recenclty deceased on e on the golf course
last year, but my wife wouldnt let me pulcuk some feathers.....

Hi Pete
I was under the impression that the original Bloody Butcher had the
feathers off a swamp bird from New Zealand that I am unable to recall the
name of.

I know this must be a day late or so, but I thought the Bloody Butcher had
Crow's wing in place of Mallard or Teal? Or is this not legal, anymore, for
tying? I'd think crow wing is still fine for a tying material... regardless,
is this the "standard" butcher, with black hackle, that uses crow, or is it
all? Just curious.
Tight lines,
Pete
