Hello Pete, Greetings
I see Ginger has given you a great choice of patterns for the Northern Pike, I live now in Florida but I use to live in Michigan and have had many Northern Pike on the end of the line both Summer and Winter, even had a few on the end of the spear, to bad your a die hard catch and release guy because when prepared correctly by taking out the "Y" bones, Pike are very good dinner and shore lunch table fair. As far as Fly's go Ginger has hit the nail on the head, Pike are very aggressive and have been nicknamed the water wolf along with the Musky. I think any pattern that is big and hairy and bright will do the trick, dark can be good also, I prefer chartuse. It does not seem to matter if it's on the top or subsurface, If they are Hungry and they see it, they will eat it, Also remember, you can never move a pike fly faster than a Pike can come to get it, My fishing has shown me that they prefer a faster retrieve. Here are some links to check out pertaining to Pike and some Fly's, Enjoy, and good fishing to you. How many pounds is HUGE??? My personal best Pike is 43" and weighed almost 30 pounds.
