What pattern(s) do you use for your big traveling sedge? Inquiring minds would love to know and share the patterns that have been successful for you.
Hi Joyce,
The traveling sedges we have in these parts are 1" long from head to tip of wings. The body is 5/8" long. Color of wings is a mottled dark brown, and the body is a light greyish olive green with brown ribbing bands. Legs are brown, with the longest ones 5/8" long. Antennae (not usually used on the patterns) are 3/8" long.
Patterns anglers have used successfully are:
Clark's McKenzie Caddis (similar to a Clark's Stonefly but using the above colors and size)
Goddard Caddis (commonly suggested by the local flyshops. I like to color the stock Goddards with art markers)
Mikulak Sedge (without and with rubber legs - a standard British Columbia stillwater pattern)
Tied-down caddis (similar to the Salmon Candy fly, in both tied down and emerger versions)
Really, anything the right size and approximate color that 'skitters' well and doesn't sink will bring the fish up to blast the fly. It's exciting fishing right before dark.
Wes
