My experience has been quite similar to this. I just got into fly fishing about five
years ago thanks to my now father-in-law. I felt bad using up all of his flies (well,
I kept snapping them off...over zelous casting). It later dawned on me that I might
like fly tying... so on our honeymoon three years ago, my wife bought me this small
Orvis introductory fly tying book. It was then just a matter of picking up my vise
and other materials that I needed, built a pine box to keep all of my "crap" as my
wife puts it, and I have tied everyday since. I'm pretty much a self taught tier as
well, reading books on different technique, checking the web, helpful suggestions and
anectdotes from the great folks here.
Well, I took a half day from work today, time's a'wastin'...I know of a river nearby
that's callin my name.

This is a great topic! I got into flytying for similar reasons- you fish differently when you aren't afraid to lose flies. Would anybody else like to share there story?? Here is my story.
I got into flytying when I was fourteen (23 years ago) when I was paying the then outrageous price of $0.75 per fly (springs wigglers) for steelhead fishing. I then went to the library, read up on what I needed, and bought my first book (Complete Book of Flytying by Leiser), tools, and materials. Other than a two hour tying session with my high school wrestling coach, I was pretty much self taught until 5-6 years ago. Then I discovered the seminars in local flyshops, then FFF conclaves, then this list, and I have been learning and expanding my skills ever since.
