Hi Deb, speaking of Steve Thornton, i recently met and got to spend some time with him while he was in town, (on a photo shoot) working. You know he's a professional photographer. He came over to the house and saw the gallery also. He also did a dekmo at the Red Rose, and i got his book and four flies. The flies were $25 each. Had to have him in the gallery though, lol. He's a really nice cat. Well have fun in Mexico. I've only been once, (10 day vacation, actually NOT working, lol) but what a country. I LOVE it. mark...........p.s. go to the bullfights, it's a gas..............lol

I have just used a small baitfish pattern so far but you can tie squid this
way and I have seen thinner profiles that could be adapted to eel and
minnows. I don't know how well they would work. The original idea was a
subsurface fly that passed water through the fly. Many people end up
sealing the back of the fly with too much glue or epoxy and some even seal
the front on purpose which turns the fly into a popper style and they fish
it on the surface. If you make the front top stick out further than the
base you end up with a jigging action. I use a couple coats of epoxy along
the belly of the fly to seal the lure tape and the foam well this makes my
fly a little heavier on the bottom and I've heard good things back from the
guys that have fished them. They go through the water a little straighter
(my own word.... hee hee). Byard didn't seem to mind when I traded them
for coffee at the striper clave. I couldn't bring myself to use the instant
coffee when his coffee smelled sooo good. I know who to camp next to from
now on. I don't know if he's tried to fish them yet but he may have some
input to add. There aren't any rules. Have fun with the shape and come up
with something new.
Try putting a tarpon style tail on it and making it a popper. ;) That
would make for an interesting fly. I can send you a foam shape I use if
you would like. I tie them on 1/0 hooks. I use glitter from craft stores
called diamond dust. It is just really fine glitter. You can sprinkle it
on the belly of the fly if you want to cover up where the foam comes
together. Or mix it right into your epoxy when you coat the head of your
flies or sprinkle it on the fly while the epoxy is still wet for extra
effect. I use permanent art markers they call them Prismamarkers here. I
think the UK has a brand that Steve Thornton uses on his nymphs that would
work also.
I will try to tie up a couple of these for Hans site when I get back from
Mexico.
Deb
