Scott it is the model number.  Usually there are families of hooks and the
model is in that family i.e. the 518 is a dry fly hook.  also it is a
straight eye, 3X fine, variable wide gape/short shank, microbarb, bronze.
There are so many variations that a model number is easier to use than all
this description.
