Subject: Re: [VFB] Spey Hackle?
I've found the stuff Tom is breeding to be almost like hair. It's very fine and breaks easily. I have some earlier spay feathers and some later ones that he bred. I'm not real hot on them yet although they do show promise. I picture the original spey feathers to be closer to a Roosters tail, long schlappen so to speak. We use a shorter version of it now in a lot of our salmon patterns for throats. I've heard the same ... original spey cocks are extinct. Breeding a bird to have the same characteristics would not bring back a lost species. This is why we have to protect the birds that are on the endangered list. I also thought the marabou would make a wonderful Eagle sub. It's also pretty on salmon flies.
