Funny thing happened to me today on the crooked...
Was fishin along...all going very very well...was up to 23 trout in 4 hours...numbers enought to make even Frank happy...and all the sudden it happened... I was pulling in my line to go fetch me a beer and I felt something catch my fly...turns out it was the back of a rattlesnake attempting to cross the river...got it about 3 inches up from the rattle... now if you have ever seen a rattle snake in a river splashing about cause some drunk fly fisherman snagged the back of it with a copper john...its an interesting sight...not a very large snake at about 3 ft long...my first instinct was to keep reeling in...DUH thats a dumb idea,,,,one very wet, very pi$$ed off rattlesnake with a fly in its back coming right at me...and its my own doing...ok...time for a new plan...maybe I can just break it off...hold on tight and give it a good firm tug...well, turns out rattlesnakes arent very heavy...now theres a rattlesnake still on my line...about 20 feet behind me in the water drifting right towards me...right towards me...thats not good...apply same principal...launch rattlesnake forward in river...ok...time for new plan again...dang...thats my last copper john...lets try that again, maybe I can dislodge my fly....snake goes airborne again...nope...didn't [EMAIL PROTECTED], guess I'm gonna have to swith flies...ok...reel in...cut leader off...cranky rattlesnake goes down river with 9 feet of leader in tow...dang it...I want my fly back...now where is that beer... I didn't know there were rattlesnakes in crooked canyon...suppose I never thought about it...guess it makes sense...perhaps now there is one less... |
