Be careful what you ask for. My two trips over there where focussed on training India
resources to do my job! India has been a major focus for IT job flight from the US. My
organization is working with large financial organizations moving significant
activities to India. At resource costs about 1/10 of what it is in the US to do a
similar job you can get significant resources applied to any activity. Domestic IT,
has had some erosion, about 10 - 15% in work force reduction, although that has to be
tempered by the increased management of remote resources on a different time schedule
than the US.
It also takes are really long time to get there. BOS - Frankfurt, Frankfurt - Dehli,
Dehli - Bangaladore, - 28 - 36 hours depending on layover.
You don't go for the week, that is why my trips where 3 weeks. and work on Saturday
and Sundays just to cut done the duration of the trip.
Although it can be perceived as being a luxurious opporunity to see the world,
business travel it isn't that much fun. I didn't have time to fish, or tie flies as I
am concerned about getting my kit and tools stuck in customs. I did want to find some
jungle cock in India but my efforts were work focused instead. My travels even in the
US - BOS - ATL or LGA, I don't take my fly stuff as I have had stuff confiscated by
ATS inspectors, because I forgot to check it or mail it ahead. I am normally running
thru the airport to get on the shuttle.
Believe me the last thing I enjoy is sitting in a hotel room somewhere, eating hotel
food, talking to my family on the phone or via email.
I haven't traveled this extensively in the last 5 years, prior to that it was pretty
extensive in the US, 4 days out somewhere in the US, and then home. The trying to get
home part can be really trying, I've ended up using planes, trains, automobiles,
buses, boats to get home. Getting stuck somewhere really is bad, I don't recommend it
to anyone.
Marco Polo, had it made, nowadays it is just a byproduct of trying to make a living in
IT.

OK. So Aim jealous. How does one get to be a modern day Marco Polo ? Off
to see the world, a little fly fishing on the side and get paid for doing it. I will
come out of retirement for it.
