Joe, There are a lot of ways to tie them.
Here is one way I use
Hook: I use the LO 55 scud hook. This is not the hook that should be used but the fish don't seem to care.
Thread: 8/0 the color to match the body
Normally you would use a straight shank wet fly hook from sz 12 to 20.
Weight: lead wire heavy.
Tail, Antron Yarn I use the same as the shell back, the tag ends of the antron yarn.
Rib: Fine silver wire
Body: Sparkle Dubbing No wax used to dub olive, black, tan, gray, cream
Shell back: Antron Yarn

Tying the Sowbug the way I tie it.
On the sizes smaller than sz 14, split the yarn into two lengths
Wrap the wire on the hook, use one size larger diameter wire than normally used. Tie in rib wire
Tie in a length of antron on top of the shank just behind the hook eye, leaving a tag end the hook shank plus the gape long past the bend of the hook. Fold the antron yarn back over itself from the tie in point, wrap thread back over the antron to the rear tie in point. Trap the yarn, don't cut off. It will be used as your shell back Dub the thread with the sparkle dubbing. I dub real loose so that I get some nice legs. More on that later.
Dub the body to the hook eye leaving space to tie off. With a pair of smooth face pliers, Flatten the lead under the dubbed body. Pull the Antron Yarn back over the top of the dubbed body and tie off behind the eye. Don't cut the yarn yet
Wrap the silver wire over the dubbing and shell back to form about four to five segments. Tie off. With a stiff toothbrush, Comb out the dubbing on the sides od the bug. This will leave you with a bunch of odd length legs. With your scissors at an angle , the point at the barb, and the upper end just below the hook eye, cut with one snip. This will give you the legs. If you hold the fly up to the light, It looks like all those little legs are moving
Apply head cement to the shell back.

Does anybody have a site that shows how to tie a Sowbug? I am going to

I have been there and miss not going. My back and legs are giving out and it is getting harder all the time to travel.
Murf, sit in for me. LOL
Give my regards to all, hope Mark, Byard, Kim and Richard can make it back to the Sowbug show.

I noticed our professional lurker Richard Ross on the list as well as Byard's good friend Kim Boal and an old aquaintance of mine from Slate

Run, Dave Rothrock. Sounds like a real good group of tyers. Missing from the list is our good friend Tony Spezio who has done more shows than DonO (who invented fly tying). ;-)
