I went to a local fishin' hole Monday afternoon after work, and caught a heap o' fish.

On what was Ft. Meade, and is now part of the Patuxent Wild Life Research Refuge,
there is Lake Allen, named after a brigadier general. It is at the end of the rifle
range, which makes fishing a bit more exciting than usual. Actually, because of the
current state of emergency, the shooting has been fairly frequent, so for two years
the lake has been closed to fishermen. Monday it was open.

Partly open that is. I could only get to a little feeder stream, which passed under
the road through three pipes. It's about 10 feet across, and the reachable area is
about 20 feet long, with a pretty good current, and fairly clear water. Lots of lily
pads and some hydrilla.

I started thinking that this would be a good place for bluegills, and so used a small
dry fly, and in about 1/2 hour caught 15 fish, up to about 3/4 lb. Good fun. I
noticed there were some bass that were coming up for the blue gills, so I switched to
my 8 weight, and some big streamers. In about an hour I caught 12 bass ten inches and
under, and three that were over 15 inches long: about 4-5 lbs, including the largest
bass I've caught on a fly rod. I swear that fish made a vocal roar when I hauled him
out. That's 30 fish in about and hour and a half. I've never had such a day.
