I can tell you a couple of stories about Tom, he was a friend and one of the nicest people you could meet. I have had the honor to tie right along side of Tom at several Conclaves. I met Tom in 1993 and we became instant friends. Tying next to him was a ball, he had you laughing all the time. We had the honor to have him tie at the Sowbug Roundup a few years ago. Before I met Tom, I had entered the "Pig Boat" in a bass fly contest and won first place. That was my first connection with him. One copy of his book that I have was originally owned by Dave Whitlock. This can get pretty long so I will quit now. I have an all day tying session today and need to get ready to head out. Tony

Mark,

Unfortunately all of Tom's books are out of print.
The last edition Tom was selling out of his trailer
when hed passed away last year.  I believe any left
were consigned to the Gulf Coast Outfitters flyshop in
Baton Rouge, where they were snapped up immediately.
I haven't seen any of the used third edtitions online
(my copy is falling apart, the bindings were't too
good.  I also have a first edition, somewhere in my
house, thank that one to one of my wife's misguided
reorganization efforts...).  But there are copies of
the first and second editions available through used
booksellers online.  The big difference is the
photography, the third edition far surpasses the first
two in quality.
If you can get an older edition, I'd be glad to scan
pics of whatever fly you'd like from the third
edition.

Tom was no purist, but tied things on the end of his
fly line that would catch fish.  Down here one of his
  most famous bass flies is called a Tom Nixon
spinner...actually has a willow leaf spinner blade
attached to it.  He was more into results than
"purity".  He did develops some flies that have turned
out to be excellent trout flies as well, such as the
.56%er (originally designed for panfish though).  Tom
was a great guy.  He originally came to Lake Charles
to work with PPG, then moved up to Missouri with his
wife and after she died, moved back to Lake Charles.
Tony probably knew Tom better than I did.  I know a
few stories about him though, but this is getting too
long, I'll write you a private e-mail.
