I specified them because they are the kind I use. I like them because the hole is bigger on one side than the other making it easier to get them on to most barbed hooks (I like to pinch barbs on the river otherwise my flies keep falling out of my foam lined fly box). They also have a very bright finish, the gold ones use electroplated gold, the others a very bright copper. I assume metal beads add a little more weight to the fly than glass. I use glass mostly when I need a very small bead for a midge are a tiny BHPT. I never nymph without at least one of the two flies I use having a bead, and the fly with the bead consistently catches the most fish. There may be other metal bead sellers out there who make a bead as high in quality as Spirit River, but the fly shops around here don't stock them.

I fish 90% of the time with either a BHGRHE or a BHPT on the line, often both; but lately that ugly San Juan Worm has been my lead fly and it has been out fishing even the BHPT which us my all time favorite nymph.

I also like and use most of Spirit River's other products; if I could be a demonstration tier for a fly fishing materials company after I retire from teaching, Spirit River would be a top choice for me.

Tom, is there something special about Spirit River beads? I mean that you would specify them? Just curious. Lately i've been using glass beads more and more. You need to make sure you get the kind with the silver linnings. They are the best because they really sparkle under water. Really looks like an air bubble......life like. when i was in Montana back in Aug. They had the Mt. Man Pow wow goin' on.
an area about the size of a football field with big tents (TeePees, lol) set up. Each tent had all kinds of cool stuff. Full hides of allllllll kinds, and lotta of them (the sellers) had glass beads for sale. I cleaned up. GREAT prices too. It was really amazing, because most of them even took credit cards.......YES! mark...

I forgot the recipe:

Standard Nymph Hook (14-18 work best for me)
Spirit River Gold or Copper bead to match hook size
Prismatic gold tinsel for ribbing
Cheek fur for tail.
Spirit River Dazeltron cream color for body (or use under fur from
cheek area)
Hair plucked from Hare's ear dubbed onto thread and wrapped into a hair
hackle collar behind the bead.

Slide on bead, lash on ribbing, tie on tail and wrap hair clear to bead
then trim, go back to bend and dub body to bead, wrap tinsel to bead,
pull out tuft of short black hair from ear and align their hairs
vertically with the thread and dub it on, wrap it behind the bead (it
will flare) then take a cut off tooth brush and brush it buggy.
