I was fishing last Saturday and used hot pink ultra chenille just lashed onto the hook (so on the bottom the hook was showing) and it caught fish just fine.
Call it vanity if you like, but even though ugly flies usually work fine, it is embarrassing to show them to someone who wants to see what you are using. So I figured out a "pretty" way to tie it. Here is the recipe, along with hook sizes.
San Juan Worm (hook shaped variety)
Hook: Mustad 37160 Size 12 through 6 (I've been using size 10). Thread: Uni-stretch floss (in bobbin), color to match Ultra Chenille. Body: Ultra Chenille in desired color (I use pink, red, roe orange etc.)
Directions: Wrap Uni-Stretch from eye to bend of hook covering entire hook shank. With a pinch loop attach the end of piece of Ultra-Chenille at the bend, then use a series of pinch loops to lash it along the top of the hook until you reach the eye. Tie off and trim any excess Ultra-Chenille.
It doesn't get much easier than that.

Tom,
I have some of those hooks but have not used them. Now I will. I really
like the SJW for off color run off water especially in the spring. I was
wondering where you got the string?

Yes, that is the one.

Tom, although it's not 100% clear from the photo, it looks like the
common "English Bait Hook" style. This is a Mustad 37160, available in
sizes 2 - 12. Smaller sizes, 10 - 16, are available in Talon TA-SH2200,
and Tiemco TMC 205BL (if you can find these as they don't seem to be on
the Umpqua website); and likely others.
