Actually Iain a couple of mine might have. Did the Moors (sp?) ever make it that far?
Not in occupation as far as I remember, but they did penetrate France. I think the Roland epic tells of how the Moors were defeated somewhere in France. They had most of the Iberian peninsula occupied during the first few ages of the second millenium, and where finally defeated by the Reyes Catolicos (Ferdinand and Isabella, who also sent Columbus on his way...). The last Moorish ruler in Spain, the Sultan (? or something, can't remember now) of Granada (the Alhambra) was made to flee over the Sierra Nevada, although they didn't actually 'go back' to the Maghreb (north-western Africa, mainly Morocco) but spent the rest of theirs days in the Alpujarras mountains between the Sierras and the Mediterranean -- not a bad choice...
The pass south to Granada that gives the last view on the Alhambra is (still) called 'il ultimo suspiro del Moro', or the last sigh of the Moor.
Probably more than you wanted to know...

Thankx Henk. Having been to Morocco before i ever went to Europe for the
first time, and then having spent alot of time in Spain, i always wondered
about all that. I remember standing on the beach in Tangiers (sp?) at 5:00
in the morning after leaving some nightclub, and looking across the sea
there and being able to see the Rock of Gilbraltor on the other side, and
not believing where i was and how fortunate i was to be able to be there and
see that. Something you never forget. My ancestors on my fathers side come
from above Barcelona, on the way to the Piranese (sp?) in northeast Spain by
way of, by way of, and so forth. Sposedly some French in there somewhere
too. Who knows? My great grandfather left for Mexico, worked in the
government, had to flee during the revolution.....(No stinking badges, LOL),
took my grandmother (who saw Zorro, the Fox) to New Mexico where she met my
grandfather, (a full blooded Navajo), and then they moved to Arizona, and on
to Calif. where my father was born, and then me. I didn't mean to get so
inflamed last night, but some of my ancestors never left nowhere, they got
raped and pilaged right here. when i used that word, i was refering to Gods
word, when i did this **** i was refering to evil. dig? mark.....
