First I would Call MS
and they will send you services packs 1 and 2 on a CD.
I have on if you like; I can copy it and send you a copy.
As it take MS a week to get, I can overnight it to you.

Format the drive before trying to install XP. If your version of XP is
OEM
you should have that option when you boot the computer with the CD in
the
drive. Are you using SP2? If so Microsoft has a free CD of it
available.

Fellow VFB'ers:

I am running XP Pro on my PC but it is nor running well and so I thought
it best to format the hard dive and start again. The problem is that
when
I load the XP CD Rom and try to install/reinstall it responds that the
XP
Version that I have on the hard drive is newer than that on the CD rom
and
It won't go any further. Presumably this is because I have all the
service
Packs and updates installed. What is the correct way to format with XP
Pro?

Any advice would be appreciated. Pls contact me off list at
