Nick,
Like I said, I liked the vise, and I still use it, altough not too often anymore. What I did not like was: lack of space behind the fly, the fact that you need to preset the opening between the jaws (screw on the *other* side of the vise) before closing the jaws, the little screw on top of the arm (aways in the way), the O-ring (snapped) a bit of flex in the vise. I really disliked the clamp, and used the pedestal instead. The pedestal was a little too light, though.
Now that may look like a long list, but these are all things most Danvise tiers will easily get used to. I've seen and used vises that were more than three times the price of the Danvise, but had more, and more serious drawbacks than the Danvise. The drawbacks of the Danvis are nuisances, not things I couldn't live with :-)
Besides, the Danvise has pluses too: the jaws are hardened steel, the extension gives you the space you need, the rotary function is quite smooth and does not wobble. And there's the price of course.
AFAIK the only real alternative to the Danvise would be the Peak, but that one retails at about $125 I believe. But then the Peak does not have the disadvantages I listed above...
I'll mail you the pic of the extension in an hour or so.
Martin

Martin,

I saw a metal version of the Danvise:
NVISE512.htm>

I also noted its price... $250. And since I now found this plastic Danvise
on eBay for $62.50(!), I think I won't need to work much on the choice
between them. ;o)

But if you say this Danvise has served YOU well... for years, I'm sure it
will be more than good enough to me too... for years. And it feels good
hearing you say that you doubt I can get a better vise for that money
($80)... since I now have found one on eBay for $62.50.

Looking at the first pictures I found, I too reacted on that lack of space
behind the fly. But finding some other pictures where I could see it 90
degrees from the side, it looked a LITTLE more comforting
(http://i20.ebayimg.com/02/i/02/08/2b/d9_1.JPG).

Can't tell what it will be like actually using it though, so I AM interested
in that extension picture.

Still... what do you your experience with this vise have to say about
drawbacks? (Don't you have any other than that lack of space?)

/Nick

Nick, I used the Danvise for years and it has served me well. I doubt if you can find a better vise for that money. Mark is right about the lack of clearance, but... there are extensions (euro 18) that will give you all the clearance you'll ever need. I can send you a pic if interested. And the Danvise has a metal version too, called Metallica I believe. Comes with the extension. Martin

Ok, I have a question to all of you rich of experience...

For reference I have an Eagle Rotating Vise
(http://www.jkflugfiske.com/bilder/eagle_rotating.jpg). It works for a
guy in my league, but it has draw-backs like wobbling poor-precision
made parts. When rotating, the screw also tightens itself, which can
be really annoying.
(To this comes of course the Indian jaw steel quality, but that's still in
the future... it's not that old yet.)

I'm looking at a Danvise
(http://www.eflytyer.com/tools/danica_vises.html)... the polymer vise.
Retails around $80. It doesn't look bad... but that's all I know. I
will never be able to try it out before bying, which a guy with my
budget would prefer. So I turn to You! Has it got draw-backs that I
might want to know of?

Is this "chunk of plastic" worth the money?
(For those who have tried MY vise, is there $80 of satisfaction
between
them?)

Thanks in advance
/Nick
