Subject: [VFB] Fly Tying Program for My Rotary Club
Date: Tue, 14 Dec 2004 10:31:00 -0600

I will be giving a 30 minute program on fly tying at my Rotary club tomorrow. Thirty minutes isn't much time to cover the waterfront, but I'm going to try.

First I'll give the history of fly tying and talk about how flies are tied to represent different insects, etc. Then I'll go over all the tools, etc. used in tying I'm taking a bunch of different types of feathers and also different color hackle, (necks, saddles and capes), plus dubbing, several different kinds of fur/hair, chenille, i.e. everything that I use. I'll also show the different kind/size of hooks I use in flies for trout, steelhead, bass and bluegills.

I will set up five different vises and explain how they operate and what the difference is between each. On four of the vises I'll set up for one particular fly and show the different steps, (already done), in tying it, i.e. tying in the tail, body, hackle and finally the wing and lastly, the whip finish. On the fifth vise, I'll tie the same fly from start to finish. I have several books on fly tying from beginning tying all the way to the expert tyer, that I'll show the group.

Lastly, I'll ask for questions and let the group know that if any of them would like to learn fly tying that I'll be glad to set up some classes.

What have I left out???? Keep in mind that I have only 30 minutes to do the program. Any suggestions you have will be most welcome. If you have some suggestions, please send them to me ASAP, for I'll be putting my outline together this evening.

Best,

JIMMY D
