Keith,
sorry for a late reply. When I'm in the office and labs of my client, I have only very limited access to my mails. Can read sometimes, but didn't read this thread.
I have a Cobra and I'm doing most of my tying on it. I have additionally a Thompson A like vice (Anna's at the moment) and a Regal. The Regal is now my travel vice.

The Cobra is a very neat vice with advantages and disadvantages.

Disadvantages:
It has a unique design. I like this design, but none of my existing vice-add-ons do fit. Waste basket, gallow tool. Well, I rather seldom use the gallow tool, no issue. But if you need some add ons, if Thompson don't has it or it is too expensive - no options..
It has a screw to close the jaws, a lever would be nicer. My vice has really a screw, sometimes a pain to close it well. I saw some newer ones, which had a screw as well, but this screw had a lever on its head (toggle), much better. If you get a Cobra look for this gag.
There is a second screw, whoch adjusts the jaws to the hook wire size. This screw is sometimes in the way. In this case I turn the head 45 degrees and it is ok.

Advantages:
Neat design, I really love it.
fine head, holds small and larger hooks, had never problems with the hook holding.
True rotary
Pedestral vice
I can very easily rest my left hand on the vise while holding material. This place is designed for resting your hand. The vice doesn't move or tilts when I lay my hand on it.
Very stable
Good access behind the head
Neat set of add ons.

Best
Rene

Thompson is out of business, sadly. Another company
has bought their inventory and is planning on
continuing to produce the Cobra (I can't find who it
is at the moment). As soon as all the other inventory
is gone for the other Thompson vises, you'll have to
figure out repairs on your own. Since I've had my
model A for about 20 years, and foolishly tried to put
too big a hook in the standard jaws (2nd year i had
the vise), the only thing I've ever had done was to
replace the jaws. I also bought a set of saltwater
jaws to avoid that problem. If I can find the name of
the company that boght the thmopson inventory, I'll
post it.
