Hi Nick,
While I can't say for sure that I know what exactly is in the bobbin, I can say that as a Teratologist (Birth defect guy) both by training and by employment, California has the strictest teratogen (bad agent) policy in the US, if not the world. Furthermore, I can also say that it is *likely* a heavy metal which *normally* would not cause problems unless you suck on the bobbin or somehow ingest a substancial portion of the thing. Again, without a MSDS form, I wouldn't know for sure, but I can say that an *educated guess* is that they wouldn't make it if it was *that* harmful. I would say, however, that you don't want to be sucking on the stuff, and that it wouldn't hurt to wash your hands after you use it. I doubt that it would jump off of the bobbin and attack you... though stranger things have happened ;)
Again, I can't say for sure, but it sounds like that's what it is, like a lead- or magnesium- based metal. Just for comparison, there was lead-based paint about 20 years ago that didn't hurt people unless they ate it. So I'd *guess* you're safe so long as you don't eat or lick it. Just my 2 cents...
Hope that helps more than it hurts, and tight wraps,
Pete
