DO NOT USE BLEACH. You will ruin the hair. Bleach makes it too brittle. Use 40% peroxide you can it a beauty supply store. Some states however will only allow its sale to licensed hair care professionals. I would also recommend AK Best's book on dyeing and bleaching.

So, my elk hide seems to be in pretty good shape now and I'm looking into dying/bleaching some of it. Does anyone have any good instructions on how to do so? I know RIT Dye is popular for dying, so I'm thinking about picking some up, but is household bleach the ticket for lightening? And, should I bleach before I try to dye other colors (olive, black, chocolate)?
I'm thinking about doing this with elk hair, deer hair, and pheasant tail feathers, are all the steps the same for each material?
Thanks!
Todd
