The carrot nymph was tied much earlier... I am looking for the reference, 
but it is my understanding that the orignal carrot nymph was mentioned in a 
very early english fishing magazine as a 'joke' fly, and some anglers tried 
it and found it successful..

I'll see if I can find my reference..
