I was doing all that, just was getting poor results after.

I might add this:

When you're cutting the synthetic with the 'equalizer' on top of the 'table' 
... support the equalizer AND the table with your free hand while cutting. If 
you push too hard during the cutting, you can snap one side of the equalizer 
out of the spring.

Another hint is... with feathers or synthetic, once you have the material in 
the jaws of the table and you've picked up the clip, and are reaching for the 
table to clip the material, don't grab the base of the table... it opens REALLY 
easy... you need to grab it on or above the spring clasp.
