Hi all,

I am looking for some of your sage advice. The topic:..Pontoons vs Float tubes.

The season is rapidly approaching here in Ireland, and as I spend most of my time fly-fishing the mountain lakes around I was hoping to get either a pontoon or float tube. This year I am looking to get a bit more out of the lakes besides the shore fishing..

Having done a fairly extensive web search I see that there are endless options but I do know of at least some things that I wont be needing.

I know that many of you have at least one of the above and I was looking to see if I could get some of the pros and cons of each. I know that there have been similar threads to this on the VFB before. I have saved all of those mails and will use the main points, as I see them, to launch the debate.

I very much appreciate the help. This is what makes the annual VFB subscription seem very cheap indeed!!!

Background info:

I am looking to only spend approx $300. S&H inc would be nice.

I will only ever be using the craft on still waters.

I am 6ft 3in and weigh 17 stone.

Some of the lakes can be 100 acres. Others smaller, others bigger. Being able to travel a distance will be important.

I wont be needing a motor mount. Its a nice to have as opposed to a need to have.

Topics I have seen raised before:

Size. 8ft ish for a stillwater pontoon.

Frame Material: Aluminium preferred.

Seat: A lot of people mention their seats. Is it easy to change it if its not for you? What should I look for?

Flippers: Do I need them in a pontoon?

Oars: Are there any characteristics that I should be looking out for?

Safety: Number of tubes. I will always be wearing a discreet life jacket in any case.

Cheers Folks.

Ronan.
