Hi everyone,
Sorry for not posting an update on the Team Colors swap until now, but it is going to be sent as soon as this one is done being typed. Last few days have been crazy, time-wise.
Anyhow, I was reading a past issue of Fly Tyer, I think in the early 80's (81?), and it said that you can make homemade gut by twisting 3 strands of mono, heating in boiling water, then quick-freezing in ice-water.
I'm curious of three things: What size mono? Has anyone else done this? Is there a better way to make gut- substitute for blind-eye hooks?
I've seen some use old/ used fly line as a gut substitute, but that just isn't for me. I'm looking for the tri-twisted gut look and feel (for both display and fishing purposes).
Thanks a ton in advance, and (as always) tight wraps, Pete

Hi Pete, i didn't see this til now. Went back "On" Mon, but haven't had a
chance to deal til now. Guess i'll be missing a lot of good stuff, but i
just can't be reading everyone (list email) anymore. NO time for that. I've
been experimenting with all sorts of stuff for eyes.......backing, mono,
flourocarbon, etc. I've also been experimenting with dying regular gut with
different things. It's been fun. Water proff markers works well for
dying.........the gut takes dye very well. I'm basically not a fan of
uncolored gut. Just seems to me that the color of the eye should match or
compliment the fly in some way. HELLO! Looks COOL too. With the backing or
other thick material, 2 strands is enough. You twist it, and then let it
twist on itself, and you have four strands. Perfect for large hooks. Comes
in some great colors too. I've also bought gut from 2 sources. English
Angling Trappings, go to their site. And Ronn Lucas Sr. You can contact him
through faol. He runs their A.S. flies/contest department. He has all the
different sizes of gut, and good prices on Heritage blind eye salmon hooks
as well. I've been buying up lots of blind eye salmon hooks for about a year
or so. You can also get hooks, materials, and gut material from Roger
Plourd, the salmon fly tyer. I expected to see you at Somerset???????
