"Alfred W. Miller, known to all as Sparse Grey Hackle, and known for the fine H.L. Leonard and Garrison split bamboo fly rods he fished, was not a fan of modern fly rod technology. Sparse, one fellow member joked recently at the Angler's Club, when are you going to fish fiberglass? The old man took a thoughtful swallow of straight Laphroaig, a special pot-still whiskey so strong it numbs the tongue. I'll fish fiberglass, Sparse muttered behind his steel rimmed spectacles, the morning after some concertmaster plays a concerto at Carnegie Hall on a plastic violin!"

"Being able to read trout streams is just as valuable to a fly fisherman as the ability to read a defense is to an NFL Quarterback."

Jimmy, as much as i love Sparse, i guess he never heard the one about "the
cymbal doesn't make the drummer, the drummer makes the cymbal." The night
that the Greatest Jazz Concert Ever was performed and recorded at Masey Hall
in Toronto, Canada with Charlie Parker on alto, Dizzy Gillespi on trumpet,
Max Roach on drums, Charlie Mingus on bass and Bud Powell on piano, "Bird"
was playing a plastic alto. Not to mention, concertmasters don't play
concertos, they lead the violin section of an orchestra. Concertos are left
up to "special guest artist," even when it is, a violin concerto. mark.....
