Actually i missed your reply on the list Jerry. I met Fathead the first time when i was the sound-man at the Keystone Korner in S.F. (1976-1981). We had a double bill with him and Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson. Todd billed it as Keystone Gives Good Head, lol. After i moved to N.Y.C. in '81 i got to know him a lot better because we would work together in some situatoion or the other a certain number of times each year. Either in a club, or on a concert, or we'd be on the road with different groups and be on the same bill somewhere. His current wife was/is a friend of mine when they first met at Sweet Basil. You know how it is......you see and work with, all the same people year in and year out somewhere. Either you both/all live in N.Y.C. or on the road. When i wasns't on the road i was in the Vangaurd or Sweet Basil or someother club every night. So, do you fly fish, and tye flies? I didn't know there were any Jazz cats out there lurking, lol. Actually i have about at least a half dozen good friends who do fly fish who are professional Jazz musicians. George Mraz for instance. One of the all-time best bassist ever.........LOVES fly fishing and is very good at it. He's been doing it for many, many years. Well, i gotta run...later. mark..............p.s.
Byard, the BULK of this was off list.

Mark,
Don't know if you saw this on the list. Would love to hear a bit about your
music career ? What did you play, where, who with, etc.

BTW, the only sax solo you ever need to hear in the rock and roll genre is
Fathead's 12(?) bar intro to "The Night Time is the Right Time".

Mark,

How did you come to know Fathead. I did not know him,but had did meet him
twice. Providence, R.I. 1964 and again in NYC in the late 60's

I played in a rock band in High School and lived in Fall River,
Mass. Being next door to Newport, R.I. I saw and heard virtually every
act at the first 5 Newport Jazz Festivals. In addition, most the acts
played in small clubs before and after the Newport gigs in Fall River,
Newport (Viking Hotel), Boston (Paul's Mall) and in Providence (that great
club in East Providence at the six corner's intersection) and, of course the
MECCA, Birdland in NYC.

Over the year's got to know some of them pretty well. My bass teacher
was pretty well known and sat in a lot of sets and I was fortunate to
be hanging around and meeting and listening to the greats from the 40's 50's
and 60's.

The other all time, all time sax solo was the famous 27 bar solo that Paul
Gonsalvez one of Ellington's band members played in in Newport in 1956,

Have you ever heard Ellington's New Orleans suite. Almost too powerful to
bear. As I recall Hodges died in the middle of the recording sessions.

Man, I am pulling out the old VINYL and cranking up the speakers as I type.
