Del and all the best substitution for the flicker feather is this;
Mourning Dove or Bob White Quail wings. Clip them as close to the body as
possible and remove the individual feathers from the wing. Wash them in warm
water and mild detergent then rinse in warm water, make sure the oily residue
and soap are removed or the feathers or they will not hold color. After they
have been cleaned they need to be dyed the brightest yellow possible, the best
is Venard's yellow. If you can find Venard's use 1/2 teaspoon per half gallon of
water. If you cannot find Venard's, Rite will do too but you will have to use
the entire package to get the proper shade of "Yaller." When they have been dyed
and dried they will have a darkish yellow color to them and that is the color
you want. If you have any other questions about Southern Appalachian flies feel
free to ask. Good luck.
