Hey, Mark K! Just gained access to the computer after 3 days and the weekend,
and I'm going through 212 more e-mails after this one...

My preservative for 'bugs' is as follows:
7 parts Grain Alcohol (aka 200-proof Ethyl Alcohol)
1 part Glycerol/ Glycerin
2 parts water (I use deionized, but you don't have to)

For fragile bugs (duns and spinners, among others), I up the glycerol to 2
parts and decrease the water to 1 part, per 10 total parts. It doesn't
preserve any better, but raises the viscosity and prevents sloshing in the
bottle.

Hope that is better... leave it to a biologist (me) to be confusing with how to
mix up a solution...

I have also been known to use Rocal, DEPC, and Dimethylsulfoxide when working
for the PA Dept. of Envir. Protection, but I don't recomend it unless you have
a reason to do it that way. More confusing lingo... sorry about that. Just do
as above and you should be golden.
Thanks and tight wraps,
Pete

I'm not sure about the "70%". Are you making a 9-to-1 mix of ethyl and
glycerol where the ethyl is called "70%"? The numbers you've quoted don't
appear to add to 100.

Thanks for the advice -

Mark
