I just came across a tool that can be useful to you GPS
users.  It's, the United States Geological Survey, which 
has proved to be very useful in finding locations with hard
to locate or obscure names. 

You can obtain the results in lat/long format if you
want to use a GPS on the ground. You can also select
the link called "show feature location" to generate a
map. 

For example, using the link below, I typed in the words 
"Elk River" in the field called "Feature name".I then 
selected "Alabama" for the state. I pressed the "Send Query" 
button. The results show the Elk River and features along it, 
including the Fish Hatchery The coordinates for each are listed.
