You're right, it's the ostrich that I have.  The best pattern has been to cover
a large, say size 4, tmc 200R with a very closely overlapped progression of the
web.  This, with some silicone strands as a tail and a bright red head of seal
and glitter like EP sparkle has been very attractive to rainbows and bass
alike.  

They have a very noticeable pulsating appearance in the water.  I suspect
you've seen that with your soft hackles.
