Sowbugs are isopods. (Whereas amphipods are compressed side to side, isopods are compressed top to bottom.) They are common in oceans. There are also terrestrial forms. Yes they are those small things that hide under rotten logs and in the corners of damp basements. Even the terrestrial forms uptake oxygen with gills.

I have found them in ponds here in New York State. The fresh water aquatic forms are not as common as the marine forms. The aquatic forms do not lay eggs onto a substrate. The female brood the young on herself and carry them around until its time for them to be on their own.
