I just looked up web references to the foam pipe insulation, and they list this product as a polyethylene. So pipe insulation is a grade of X.P.E. foam. Depending on the maker, this could be a source of excellent fly tying foam. There are about three grades of X.P.E. I like 4# X.P.E. the best of all the kinds of foam available.

You have found one of my preferred foams. At local stores I have found it in tan, bronze and black. However, supply of a particular color at a given store/supplier is not reliable. Who (except us) cares what color is on the pipes anyway!!!

I found a neat piece of pipe insulation in black that seemed to be closed cell and had bigger cells. I will also become a more observant beach comber. Thanks again.
